The Hebrew word “shalowm” and its root word “shalam” (peace) means “completeness, welfare, completeness (in number), safety, soundness (in body), health, prosperity, tranquility, contentment, peace in human relationships, peace with God especially in covenant relationship, and peace from war.”
For example:
Numbers 6:24-27 says, ‘”The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ‘ 27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.” (NIV 1984)
Peace = blessing = God keeping us = God’s face shining towards us = God’s grace = God’s name in you
For example:
Job 22:21-30 says, “Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. 22 Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart. 23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent 24 and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines, 25 then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you. 26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God. 27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows. 28 What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways. 29 When men are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’ then he will save the downcast. 30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.” (NIV 1984)
Peace = prosperity = restoration = God is gold = delight in God = God hears prayers = keeping your word = God shows the way = salvation = deliverance = clean hands
The Greek word “eirene” and its root word “eiro” (peace) means “a state of national tranquility, exemption from the rage and havoc of war, harmony between individuals, security, safety, prosperity, of the Messiah’s peace, the way that leads to salvation, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is the blessed state of devout and upright men after death.”
For example:
John 14:27-31 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31 but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.” (NIV 1984)
Peace = given by Christ = opposite of trouble = opposite of fear = Jesus is coming back = Jesus did God’s will
Our goal is to have peace which means…
… God keeps us close and shines grace down on us.
… we reflect God’s Name put in us by the Holy Spirit.
… we are restored and delight in our lives with God.
… we talk to God, He answers prayers, and speaks to us.
… we have clean hands and are delivered by His salvation.
