Amplified Article: 7 Verses about Godly Parenting

7 Verses that help me Cognitively Internalize Godly Parenting

VERSE 1: “TRAIN ABOUT THE LORD”

Ephesians 6:4 (close to Colossians 3:21)

“Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.” (AMP)

VERSE 2: “TALK ABOUT THE LORD”

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NIV): “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

VERSE 3: “CALL IT WHAT IT IS”

Proverbs 20:11 (NIV): “Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.”

VERSE 4: “DISCIPLINE AND PUNISH TO PRODUCE RIGHTEOUSNESS”

Hebrews 12:5-11 (NIV): “And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,  6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?  8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.  9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!  10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.  11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

VERSE 5: “CORRECT WISELY”

Proverbs 29:15-17 (NIV): “The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.  16 When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.  17 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.”

VERSE 6: “TEACH THE BIBLE TO EQUIP THEM FOR LIFE”

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (AMP): “But as for you, continue to hold to the things that you have learned and of which you are convinced, knowing from whom you learned [them], 15 And how from your childhood you have had a knowledge of and been acquainted with the sacred Writings, which are able to instruct you and give you the understanding for salvation which comes through faith in Christ Jesus [through the leaning of the entire human personality on God in Christ Jesus in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness].  16 Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action), 17 So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

VERSE 7: “SHARE ABOUT YOUR WALK WITH THE LORD”

Psalm 78:4: “Listen, dear friends, to God’s truth, bend your ears to what I tell you. I’m chewing on the morsel of a proverb; I’ll let you in on the sweet old truths, Stories we heard from our fathers, counsel we learned at our mother’s knee.  We’re not keeping this to ourselves, we’re passing it along to the next generation – God’s fame and fortune, the marvelous things he has done.” (MSG)
