Amplified Article: God

GOD

It is proper for us to begin with an understanding of God.  The ‘god’ designated in the Bible, the Holy Scriptures (the Old Testament and the New Testament) is designated as the chief-est and most powerful uncreated spiritual being of all spiritual beings and all physical reality.  It is proper to capitalize the word “G-o-d” as well as any pronouns or items that describe Him.  It is a respect thing and delineates Him from all other spiritual beings.

God as described in the Bible is YHWH (often written out ‘Yahweh’ and pronounced yah-way) which is a name that comes from Exodus 3:13-15 (in the Old Testament):

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”  14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'”  15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers– the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob– has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.”

The name “I Am Who I Am” is the letters Y-H-W-H in the original language of ancient Hebrew.  That is a little technical, but important since throughout human history many gods have had names.  You may have heard of Zeus or Allah or some other name, but these are not the same gods as the God described in the Bible.  Specifically with Allah, from the Christian perspective, Allah is not the same as YHWH and the basic characteristics are different. We do not wish to seem dismissive in any way, but the God in the Bible is YHWH and is the uncontested Supreme Being of All the Universe.
