B1BLE BY THE NUMB3R5: Number 2

Sometimes people see truth in patterns in the Bible that are fanciful. There are indeed symbolic numbers and spiritual meanings to some numerals, but all numbers are not pregnant with mystery or a divine conspiracy.

What about the number: 2?

When I think about the number two, my brain immediately goes to the emphasis and contrast in the Bible between good and evil. Adam and Eve in Genesis (OT) are given the choice between obeying God (good) and disobeying God (evil). There is the narrow way (good) and the broad way (evil) mentioned in the Gospels by Jesus (NT). The entire paradigm of 1 John settles around light and dark, for God or against Him, and belonging to God and not belonging to Him. All good vs. evil.

Thinking about Genesis, in Genesis 2:24, the Bible describes how a man and woman become one flesh through marriage, highlighting the unity and partnership represented by the number 2. 2 become 1 in marriage is God’s design of a relationship that mirrors His nature.

The number 2, admittedly also with the number 3, is often linked to witnesses, testimonies, and telling the truth. The number 2 is often linked to the concept of witness or testimony. In Deuteronomy 19:15, it is stated that “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.” This underscores the principle that truth and validity are confirmed through multiple witnesses… at minimum 2. This principle is affirmed in the New Testament in relationships and in church leadership.

The book of Revelation also mentions the Two Witnesses in Revelation 11 who will prophesy during the end times… reinforcing the concept of dual testimony. No matter what you think the 2 represent; there are 2!

Keeping Genesis and Revelation in mind (as we’ve mentioned them both), each of these books has the same tree twice… 2 trees. In addition, in the Garden of Eden, there were 2 significant trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which represented different aspects of human experience and divine command.

The 2 tablets of the Law also come to mind. Moses broke the first set of 2 in the Book of Exodus. God then graciously replaced his broken pair with another pair.

The number 2 seems to be a number that describes fundamental reality and life: human relationships, covenant, and even truthfulness.
