ZECHARIAH CHAPTER 6:9-15
Chapter Outline:
Crowning of the Priest (verses 9-14) (Vision 9)
Messianic Note (verse 15)
Focus: A little bit of context
There were several social roles in the ancient world that did not cross. Royalty and kings and nobility were one class. Priests and prophets were another class. It was very rare for those to mix and people usually chose one or the other and never both across many cultures. That is what makes this 9th vision so compelling is that God is describing a priest-king who would come… the Messiah. He would be unlike all others.
Focus: How does this draw us to God?
God lays out what He will do in the future. This section and vision is a type and shadow if all He would do for God often lets us know what will happen before it happens. The foreshadowing is all about God building His Kingdom and in God’s Kingdom He combines priest and king and the authority of both of those offices. Yes, God is building a physical temple in Zechariah’s time, but this vision is of the next temple which is a spiritual one led by a Priest-King. The Church is the temple. The Church is foreshadowed.
Focus: OT to the cross
God is building this temple through Christ because He knew they would be disobedient. God’s people have always turned away and yet He has grace. Jesus is the point of this vision. People from far off (Gentiles) will be part of the Kingdom of God. The Priest-King would be the head of this temple and it will be filled with all kinds of people from everywhere. The Jews needed to be obedient in order to participate in the salvific events that God would bring to pass. The Messiah was not dependent on any human institution or plan but is fully God’s plan of salvation for the nations.
