ZECHARIAH 5: The Flying Scroll

ZECHARIAH CHAPTER 5:1-4

Read Zechariah 5

Chapter Outline:

Verses 1-2: Flying Scroll Vision (Vision 6)

Verse 3: Meaning of the Vision

Verse 4: Application

Focus: A little bit of context

The first set of visions of Zechariah were visions of great hope and power and accomplishment of the will of God. They have much symbolism for the people to whom they were written.  The next set of visions carry with them warnings even more than before and continue with deep symbolism.  Evil has no place among God’s people and God warns them of this Truth.  The scroll represents God’s Word going out amongst Israel.

Focus: How does this draw us to God?

Zechariah sees a humungous scroll floating and flying in mid-air.  The scroll symbolizes the curse of God against sin in Israel.  Both sins against people and sins against God are highlighted.  Sinners will be cleansed or purged from God’s people as His will is made known and accomplished among them.  The covenant benefits are not for sinners (ones who reject God), but for those who keep the covenant.

Focus: OT to the cross

The ultimate fulfillment of the cleansing and purging will be found in Christ, but to be honest, that is not present in this passage.  That is us completely adding meaning to the passage and to be honest, Jesus can be shoehorned into any passage.  So please simply take note that God sends out His cleansing because He wanted His people holy and the call to faithfulness goes out to all the earth.
