ZECHARIAH 2: The Measuring Line

ZECHARIAH CHAPTER 2:1-13

Read Zechariah 2

Chapter Outline:

Verses 1-5 Man with Measuring Line (Vision 3)

Verses 6-7 Command to Return

Verses 8-13 Promises of God

Focus: A little bit of context

Jerusalem at the time of this vision is not a populated place because of the destruction that happened in 586 BC and the struggles to rebuild (see the Book of Nehemiah).  There was more than enough room for anyone who was around.  The strangeness of the vision is that this man (angel) is going to measure to make sure there is enough room for all the people who would later be in the city.  God is about to fill the city with tons of people and He Himself would be the defending wall around it.  The key word: regather. God will regather His people and set them in Jerusalem. There is also a promise for people who are not yet God’s people that He will gather them and make them His own.

Focus: How does this draw us to God?

This is a promise about what God will do in the future… New Jerusalem talk.  See Romans and Hebrews and Revelation for similar themes and similar metaphors.  God wants them to rebuild the walls and Jerusalem in a physical sense, but also there will be future fulfillment as well.  Build physical walls and God promises to do more than that.  The mixed metaphor in Revelation includes all people living under God’s rule.  Myriads and tons of people will be with the Lord.  The key concept: the regathering will happen through the Gospel.

Focus: OT to the cross

The ultimate fulfillment of this passage is the building of the Kingdom of God under the rule of the Messiah.  Salvation will be the walls of the Kingdom.  The New Jerusalem is Christ’s Kingdom.  Zion is Christ’s Kingdom.  This chapter is a build-up for what God will eventually do and it all comes true and into fulfillment in Christ Jesus.
