ZECHARIAH 1: Four Craftsmen

ZECHARIAH CHAPTER 1:18-21

Read Zechariah 1

Chapter Outline:

Verses 1-6 Call of the prophet

Verses 7-17 Horseman Among the Myrtles (Vision 1)

Verses 18-21 Four Craftsmen (Vision 2)

Focus: A little bit of context

This vision of Zechariah is very confusing (yes… more than some of the others!).  There does not seem to be a concrete answer about what this vision means for people in Zechariah’s day, future days (now our past), or our days (and our future).  Interpreting this is an overwhelming task. It does, at its most basic meaning, present a good vs. evil situation.

Focus: How does this draw us to God?

God promises His presence among His people.  Some groups stand in opposition to what God wishes to do in Jerusalem among His people, but God will continue with His will.  There will be opposition, but God is sovereign.  In the vision, the “horns” appear to be the oppressors (evil), and the “craftsmen” are God’s agents to overcome (good).  God will use people to defend against His enemies.  God’s building projects in Jerusalem and His kingdom will certainly be done.  Zion will be built/re-built.  God will handle it all.  He makes all things work together for good.

Focus: OT to the cross.

Faith hangs in regardless.  We see the beginnings of the promise of the Messiah in this vision for Jesus is the Ultimate Overcomer of evil.  Zion (a spiritual nickname for Jerusalem) will be built up and set firm so that the Messiah can come.  God’s hands are beginning to build the backdrop for His promises of the Messiah to come true in the fullness of time and history.  One step at a time God is working so the Messiah can come.
