ZECHARIAH 1: Call of the Prophet

ZECHARIAH CHAPTER 1:1-6

Read Zechariah 1

Chapter Outline:

Verses 1-6 Call of the prophet

Verses 7-17 Horseman Among the Myrtles (Vision 1)

Verses 18-21 Four Craftsmen (Vision 2)

Focus: A little bit of context

The message of Zechariah begins with the explanation that God is angry with the previous generation for their lack of faithfulness which resulted in the exile to Babylon.  He sees in them the same root of sinfulness and lack of attention/worship to Him and this is a warning.  His desire is that they be different.  Faithful.  Worshipful.  Obedient.

Focus: How does this draw us to God?

God does not uphold sin and brings judgment in His timing.  For these particular people, their judgment had been a time in Babylon.  Now they were returning.  God says over and over “return” culminating in “repent.”  It is God’s desire that His people actually be His people and that they have a relationship with Him.  This is why the phrase “I will be their God and they will be my people” is repeated from Genesis to Revelation.

Focus: The OT to the cross

We will see in these chapters from this prophet that the purposes of God in dealing with sin and waywardness and guilt will ultimately be found in the cross of Christ.  Jesus is Who these people needed desperately.
