MICAH CHAPTER 2: Just Keep Going Forth with the Lord

MICAH CHAPTER 2: Just Keep Going Forth with the Lord

The first verse of Micah chapter 2 makes it very clear to whom he is speaking. He makes it very clear who it is that should fear the Lord or be unsettled by the prophecies he is uttering.  A person who reveres the Lord and worships Him or has believing loyalty to YHWH need not fear the words that Micah is laying down from God Almighty.

Who should be worried?  Who should be full of fear?

Verse 1: Those who devise wickedness and lay in bed thinking about how to be wicked

Verse 2: Those who covet and oppress others to get what they want

To these kinds of people, God has a planned disaster that He has devised in verse 3.  It is never those who diligently seek the Lord who ever need fear His wrath.  God brings judgment on the unrepentant heart that they might repent and turn to Him.  People who are upright need not consider these words directed at them, verse 7.  It is the apostate (verse 4) that needs to heed.

God is very patient in these verses with those that lie, steal, and cheat.  The lifestyle of many people lead them away from God, yet God is patient with them and us as much as possible.  People are often earthly and drawn to our flesh.  The result is destruction.  Verse 10 is quite telling in that God references “uncleanness that destroys with a grievous destruction.”

God never wants us to get life from fleshly passions and idols.  He does not want us to strive after wine and strong drink, verse 11, because those idols and aspects of life are human-based and empty.  This is why Jesus commands much in the New Testament to give up self.

Self is empty.  God is full.

Self is death.  God is life.

Self is fleshly.  God is spiritual.

Take note of these words from James in the New Testament that would apply to these folks Micah is speaking to that seem to have a double nature and are not dedicated to God.

James 4:8 (ESV): “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

NOT being double-minded means we have life in Christ alone and keep Him on the throne.

NOT being double-minded means we give up self and idols and those things that compete for God.

NOT being double-minded means we every day strive to not be stuck on earthly things.

There are also, during this judgment, promises given by God. The promises of God are many as is the depth of His love and grace for us. Verses 12-13 contain many promises for us:

Assembly is promised which is the promise of God taking care of us.

Gathering the remnant is promised which is God taking care of us.

God promises to set His people together which is God taking care of us.

God promises to be at the head which is God promising His leadership.

THE POINT

Micah 2 shares with us that we should “hang in there” and “do the right thing” and “follow God” because none of those paths in life are in vain. When we seek Him, He will care for us and lead the way.  It is always that way.  God is consistent.  Keep going forth with the Lord and keep judgment in mind, but understand that the righteous need not be too concerned about the ultimate end when judgment happens.  Faith will get you through.  Believing loyalty will get you through. Keep going forth with the Lord faithfully and He will do His part.
